Benjamin H. Kohlberg was in the business of selling cigars
and tobacco on 224 Main Street in Stockton, California in 1876. By 1880
he had moved his store to 158 Hunter Street, or the corner of Weber and
Hunter. He was still doing business here by 1887. Frank Cavagnaro in 1886
was running a saloon in this city on El Dorado Street, between Main and
Market. By 1888, Frank had sold his bar and opened another called the Elite
Saloon on 261 Main Street. Sometime between this period and 1893 Frank
Cavagnaro f ormed a partnership with Ben Kohlberg and began to wholesale
wines liquors and cigars. They operated from a store at 523 Main Street.
If the partnership lasted through 1895 it is not known. They were partners
through 1894, and by 1896 Frank Cavagnaro was the sole owner. Data was
found to be scarce on the company after this time. It is known though that
after 1903 neither Frank nor Ben were selling liquor in Stockton. There
is a Fiorenzo Cavagnaro listed as wholesale liquor dealer in San Francisco
from 1891 through 1894, and again in 1902 to 1906; however, I do not believe
this is the same person.

The sources for this flask were the Hunt collection of Portland,
Oregon for the pint, and the Bragetta collection, on display at the 1972
Folsom Bottle Show, for the half pint. All are made of clear glass and
air vented at the shoulders.
-
Some overall milky stain. A crude flask with a large elongated
teardrop bubble across reverse side, and a fully fused small white piece
of slag in the embossing panel.

The firm of Evans and O'Brien was a fairly short-lived one,
it opened in June 1868 and continued as Evans & O'Brien until January
1875 (See Bottle No. 53 in "A Choice Listing of the Most Desired Older
Whiskey Bottles" by John L. Thomas). John H. O'Brien came to California
in 1849 mined in Amador County until June 1868 when he and Evans founded
Evans & O'Brien. After January 1875, when the partnership was dissolved,
Evans went on into polities and O'Brien continued the firm as "J. H. O'Brien,
wholesale liquors," until 1888 when he moved to Oakland. He died in Oakland
at the age of 65. Evans died in 1883 at the age of 57. The sources for
this pumpkinseed were Pat Bragetta, Alvin Hopkins and the Hunt's of Portland.
Most all these flasks that have turned up are the half pints. Pat Bragetta
says there are presently about 5 of the pint sized ones known. All are
made of clear glass and air vented at the shoulders. I would date these
flasks from about 1885 to 88 beeause of their being air vented.

Edward Oullahan was operating a saloon in Stockton California
in 1886. It was located at 349 and 351 (two entrances ) Sutter Street.
This was most likely the Pioneer Liquor House. His sales were both wholesale
and retail. James A. Dake took over the saloon sometime in the 1890's and
operated it until June, 1920, when the Supreme Court sustained the validity
of the Eighteenth Amendment and the Volstead Aet. The Oullahan coffin flasks
were at one time considered quite rare; however Stockton diggers have turned
up quite a number of them since 1969. These flasks come in both the pint
and half pint sizes. The pint size is still fairly rare. They are made
of clear glass, and are air vented at the shoulders.

Another of the unknown picnics. No way to trace this one
without first finding one with a paper label. It is eastern, and has the
characteristics of a flask produced around the turn of the century. My
guess would be that it was made for sale to many saloons so that they would
not have to go to the expense of having a private mold made. It was probably
made for paper labeling only. At that time a "Dandy" was considered as
a person who paid too much attention to his clothes and appearance. It
also ment something very good, or a first class thing. I guess this second
meaning would apply to the product inside the container. Perhaps eastern
research will turn up some more information on this flask in the future.
The source was the Gilbert Menny collection of Lowden, Washington. His
is the 6 ounce size. All would be made of clear glass, and air venting
would be in the upper pattern.
