This scarce soda was used by the Lippincott & Vaughn company for their
popular mineral waters. According to an early advertisement, they also
manufactuered syrups, bitters and esscnecs. The Stockton based company
produced a couple bottles at the same address.
-
In 1857 Charles Belding bought an interest in the business of his old employers,
after he and John B. Vaughn, younger brother of A.F. Vaughn, made an unsuccessful
attempt at manufacturing soda water at Murphys, Ca. The company then became
known as Lippincott & Belding.
-
Outstanding example of this Stockton bottle from the firm of Lippincot
and Vaughn.

Lightly cleaned but retains original surface texture. The slugged out V

about perfect (lightly cleaned restoring original luster). A nice example
of this very rare and desirable soda.
-
Hard to come by, the Lippincott bottles have their own special mystique
to them. Prized for the 10 sided mug base and Stockton name on it, they
are an early and desireable soda.
-
HISTORY: It appears this bottle should be dated between the years of 1852
or 53 to around 1858. In the "History of San Joaquin County" it states
that Lippincott and Vaughn started in business of soda water manufacturing
in July, 1852. The firm of Chase & Company, the first to get started
in this line, had commenced two or three months before. But in the 1852
Stockton City Directory it lists Llppincott and Vaughn as syrup manufacturers,
so maybe they actually did not start in the soda water manufacturing business
until 1853, reason being that in 1852 there were six persons listed as
being soda water manufacturers, and one person listed as a soda peddler.
From the type of bottle, and use of this type of bottle by other soda merchants,
we believe this bottle should date no later than around 1859 or 1860.
