This is another of the very rare Western bitters with the
tooled top. We've only seen a couple of these over the years. Stockton
bottles are quite scarce. This example has some nice waviness to the side
panels and is generally in almost Nr-Mt condition with a couple scratches
and extremely minor dings. This is a tough one.

Dr. George Pierce is first found as a physician in Lowell,
Massachusetts in 1831. The Bitters was probably introduced in the early
1850's. During the time the company operated in Lowell, Pierce, and Charles
Osgood (Osgood's India Cholagogue) ran a drug business. Sometime between
1855-59 the company relocated to Boston. In Boston the George Pierce &
Co. had a number of persons involved in the manufacture of the Bitters.
Pierce's first partners were G.T. Adams, and John Couch, later in the 1880's
H.M. Hamblin, and after 1885, M.W. Joslyn and George F. Kellogg. It may
have been that Pierce himself never was involved in the Boston operations,
but remained in Lowell where he died August 20, 1864. No mention of him
could ever be found as a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, and
he may not have been a graduate of any medical institution. The Boston
firm trademarked a label for the bitters in 1877. The Indian Bitters, which
was 12 proof, was still being manufactured in Boston at 30 Hanover St.
in 1893, and is listed in the Era Blue Book for Druggists in 1899.

A pamphlet in the possession of J. C. Tibbitts reads "Hoofland's
German Bitters is different from all others. It is composed of the pure
juices or Vital Principle of Roots, Herbs, and Barks. . . . Therefore,
in one bottle of this bitters, there is contained as much virtue as will
be found in several gallons of ordinary mixtures." It says the roots, etc.,
were grown in Germany and the bitters were free from alcohol and accompanying
objections. However, Hoofland's German Tonic consisted of a bottle of the
bitters laced with rum and flavoring for those so inclined.

Here is an old & very pretty amber bitters bottle that
is about 9 inches tall. It was found in some diggings around Sierra/Plumas
County California. It is embossed on front and back. There are around 20
or so bubbles in the glass, and it has a tooled top. It has a couple of
tiny marks inside. It is a very clear, rich-amber color and displays absolutely
beautifully in a window. It does have one tiny chip out of the top lip
of the bottle
